Day 4, Election Day!
This Tuesday was Super… exhausting.
Southern California still really likes to vote on Tuesday. We had a steady stream of voters all day. We only had two short instances where we had a line, but it was far and away the busiest day. We had a handful of new voters and I loved that we were able to let them vote provisionally (and know their votes will be counted). The ONLY reason I can see why a state/county/city would not allow same-day registration is because they don’t have the manpower to process new voters in a timely manner. (Americans still don’t love/understand that things involving the government often require money and labor to complete.) That, OR, there are election commissions run by people that don’t want everyone to vote. There is no other reason not to allow same-day voter registration.
Before I get back into the details of the day, I want to say I have no earthly idea how elections were called so quickly before electronic voting. We had a few hundred votes to count and that took us an hour to triple-check with 10 people working together. That was after the votes were counted twice by the machines. There is a lot of labor involved in making democracy work. I cannot tip my hat enough to our election officials and the county workers that work overtime to ensure our way of life. What they do is so vital and it’s so easy to take for granted.
