Day 3 as a Poll Worker…

The day I learned too much.

The polls opened today and apparently, so did our personal lives. If you have a kooky coworker or neighbor and you can’t really pinpoint what their odd thing is, but your gut says, “I bet that person is into some weird stuff,” I’m here to say you are right. One hundred percent of the time, you are right.

Despite learning about a “unique” alternative lifestyle, this is a nice group of people. I also learned that two days is the amount of time it takes a group of nice people to let their guard down. One person bought everyone doughnuts and one person bought a traveler of coffee. Sharing food will always be the ultimate act of love. But sharing gossip and baseless conspiracy theories about how soy makes boys more feminine in an effort to make them more compliant, is the ultimate lesson in self-control. My tongue is nearly bitten straight through.

Our group has native Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi, and Armenian speakers to help voters. I, of course, add no value to this element of our location.

Our leads are two badass Latino women. They have kids, jobs at the County I cannot imagine waking up every day to do, and I believe, they could whip the whole world into shape. They are the ground crew that makes America work. They will never be properly thanked for their service but they reenergize my desire to…
